Should Your Employees Sign A Non-Compete Agreement?

Should Your Employees Sign A Non-Compete Agreement?

A non-compete agreement is a legally binding contract between two parties where one agrees not to directly compete with the other. Competition can mean designing, developing, or publishing any content for another company that they wrote under contract with you. It can also mean simply going to work for a competitor in the same role, where that employee has the potential to share industry knowledge that should remain confidential.

Protecting intellectual property is a priority for any company. Non-compete agreements can prevent loss of this property, but only if they aren’t so restrictive as to deter people from working for you and are enforceable.

Read on to learn more about what these agreements include, their usefulness, and resources that can be helpful in writing yours.

Please note: This article is not official legal advice. I highly recommend contacting an attorney if you are considering implementing a non-compete agreement of your own.

Pros of Using a Non-Compete Agreement

  1. Eliminate conflicting products in the marketplace. It’s a highly-competitive world out there. If you prohibit writers, developers, and designers from sharing your intellectual property with others, this obviously gives you a leg up. This applies to brick-and-mortar companies who sell physical products as much as it does to web-based and e-commerce companies who sell subscriptions or support applications.
  2. Keep your trade secrets a secret. Even if an equivalent product or service is introduced to the market, a non-compete agreement prevents the sharing of all of the details, formulas, and methods that make yours unique.
  3. Retain top talent. Existing employees must be provided something as a trade-off for agreeing to this contract like increased compensation. These initiatives may cost you upfront, but investing in employees can build loyalty. Alternatively, if you hire freelance workers, and they are subcontractors, a non-compete agreement can prevent them from going directly to your clients to ask for work while they are still working for you, or for a time period after.

Cons of Using a Non-Compete Agreement

  1. It can push top talent out the door. Forcing a non-compete agreement on someone who has already started working for you could make them feel as if you don’t trust them. Desired candidates may turn down your offer if they feel the terms of the agreement will prevent them from thriving in your industry.
  2. Your agreement may not hold up when it needs to. If you have a non-compete agreement in place that is too restrictive or too vague, it may not hold up in court. You must be sure it is enforceable so that the pros outweigh the cons.
  3. The costs to enforce an agreement can be very high. Litigating an agreement can be expensive in terms of time spent sourcing information, alongside attorney and court fees. Court mandates can also slow or halt development or work with other clients while cases are being heard. Most importantly you could run the risk of having to make proprietary information public to prove your case.

Which Employees Should Sign a Non-Compete Agreement?

Companies dictate what work is done, and the company owns that work when it is complete. This puts you in the perfect position to ask regular employees, particularly those with access to proprietary or sensitive information, to sign a non-compete agreement.

Freelancers should have extra consideration. Asking them to sign a non-compete agreement could remove their ability to market themselves to other clients. This can put an unreasonable restriction on their livelihood and make the agreement unenforceable. Also, if they can only work for you, they can argue that this arrangement effectively reclassifies them as an employee of your company and are therefore entitled to rights, benefits, paid time off, etc.

What Should I Include in a Non-Compete Agreement?

Here are some key considerations to ensure your agreement is comprehensive and enforceable:

  • Effective Date: The date the agreement becomes effective.
  • Reason: State clearly why the hired party should be restricted in their actions.
  • Time Limit: Set a reasonable time frame based on your industry and interest in your property.
  • Employee Consideration: Provide existing employees a benefit in consideration of agreeing to this contract. For new employees, the point of consideration is getting the job. Given existing employees something in return for what they could lose. A higher salary, new job responsibilities, a promotion, or other benefits are all options. The actual dollar value of this offering is not the main concern; what is important is that the employee sees as a real benefit in exchange for signing the agreement
  • Negotiability: You will likely get push back on some or all of the requirements of the agreement. Prioritize and determine ahead of time which parts of the contract you’re willing to negotiate on and which ones you are not.

Consequences of a Broken Agreement

  1. Compromised content.  This is the biggest concern of a breach in a non-compete agreement. Tracking down the source of the shared content should be easy. Removing it from circulation could be difficult if the other party will not comply.
  2. Awkwardness in client relations. Freelancers who solicit work directly from one of your clients make your working relationship with that client awkward. If that freelancer bad-mouths you to the client, that can erode trust. A conversation about the writer’s approach and terms of their agreement should clear things up.
  3. You’ll probably need a lawyer. If your attempts to resolve these issues on your own do not work or if the writer contests the terms of the agreement, an attorney can help by issuing a cease and desist order, mediating a settlement out of court, or filing a lawsuit.

Other Considerations and Resources

As you formulate a plan to protect your intellectual property, keep in mind some states don’t allow or do not enforce non-compete agreements, so check if yours does before you go to the trouble of writing one. Also, you may not really need a non-compete agreement. A non-disclosure or confidentiality agreement may be enough to protect you.

If you decide that a non-compete agreement is needed, review this article to avoid some common mistakes employers make when writing theirs.

For help starting to write your agreement for an employee, freelance contractor, or write a release from a non-compete agreement, these tips and templates can help.

If a non-disclosure agreement is more appropriate, consider using this template.

And lastly, always seek qualified legal counsel when working with any type of contract.

The moderate use of black for design, especially with individual blocks and elements of the site, creates a sense of sophistication and conciseness. Hopefully, you have enjoyed this list of 25 dark WordPress themes for any business niche. Add minimalism, elegance, and style to your web project.

Dark website themes FAQ

🎩 What is a dark WordPress template?

It is a WordPress (or other CMS) template that has a dark background color or picture.

Light (white especially) website themes are more versatile. They look perfect on all screens and are rather popular now. A dark background will fit concrete niches, so it is used more rarely.

❓ When is it OK to use a dark WordPress theme?

The dark tone is more powerful and if you also use bright color accents – it will also be more dynamic and full of energy. If you want to highlight such features – you need a dark website theme.

5 Best WordPress Caching Plugins to Speed up Your Website │Elementor

5 Best WordPress Caching Plugins to Speed up Your Website │Elementor

A a caching plugin ensures that the content on your webpage does not affect your speed and that you can continue adding information to provide your users with the best content.

There are a lot of different websites available, of various sizes, with different content and information.

Some, like blog and magazine websites, rely on text, images, and videos. These elements make the web page exceedingly heavier and which will result in it taking longer to load.

Image heavy websites (like a photographer’s website, for example), will also take longer to load because of the sheer amount of information.

So is the case with ecommerce websites, where there’s a lot of static, but also dynamic content (shopping items), which make the website heavier, so why not reduce the loading speeds of all the static bloat and make sure that your users have a better experience?

Note: dynamic content can also be cached by using a CDN cache instead of the original, probably distant server, thus reducing the time it takes to load.

Caching, therefore, increases the loading speed of websites and according to Google, “no matter what, faster is better and less is more”.

Note: Using caching plugins is not the only method to increase your websites speed, and should be done in concurrence with other methods which are listed in these great articles: How to Speed up Your WordPress Website — Part 1 and How to Speed up Your WordPress Website — Part 2

Now that we’ve established that you need caching plugins for better loading speed, let’s understand why you need better loading speed times.

How to Create a Vertical Sticky Timeline Layout in Divi

How to Create a Vertical Sticky Timeline Layout in Divi

Creating a vertical sticky timeline can be extremely useful for categorizing content by year and/or month as the user scrolls down the page. The sticky date elements remain fixed beside the content for a convenient UX boost that users will appreciate.

In this tutorial, we are going to show you how to create a complete vertical sticky timeline layout in Divi. The keys to this design are (1) to give your columns a custom width so that the date elements don’t take up too much horizontal space on mobile and (2) to make the year and month sticky, with sticky limits on the section (for the year) and row (for the month).

Although this layout has multi-faceted applications, we are going to build a timeline layout for showcasing photo galleries categorized by month and year.

Let’s get started!

Sneak Peek

Here is a quick look at the design we’ll build in this tutorial.

Download the Layout for FREE

To lay your hands on the designs from this tutorial, you will first need to download it using the button below. To gain access to the download you will need to subscribe to our Divi Daily email list by using the form below. As a new subscriber, you will receive even more Divi goodness and a free Divi Layout pack every Monday! If you’re already on the list, simply enter your email address below and click download. You will not be “resubscribed” or receive extra emails.

To import the section layout to your Divi Library, navigate to the Divi Library.

Click the Import button.

In the portability popup, select the import tab and choose the download file from your computer.

Then click the import button.

Once done, the section layout will be available in the Divi Builder.

Let’s get to the tutorial, shall we?

What You Need to Get Started

expanding corner tabs

To get started, you will need to do the following:

  1. If you haven’t yet, install and activate the Divi Theme.
  2. Create a new page in WordPress and use the Divi Builder to edit the page on the front end (visual builder).
  3. Choose the option “Build From Scratch”.

After that, you will have a blank canvas to start designing in Divi.

Part 1: Building the Stick Heading

The first element we are going to design is the sticky heading that will remain fixed at the top of the page on scroll.

Add Row

To get started, add a two-fifths three-fifths column layout to the section.

divi vertical sticky timeline

Left Heading Text

In the left column, we are going to add the heading for the timeline that will be on the left side of the page. To do this, add a text module to the left column.

divi vertical sticky timeline

Then add the text “Timeline” to the body of the text module.

divi vertical sticky timeline

Under the design tab, update the following text styles:

  • Text Font: Oxygen
  • Text Font Weight: Bold
  • Text Font Style: TT
  • Text Text Color: #666666
  • Text Size: 50px (desktop), 30px (tablet), 18px (phone)
  • Text Line Height: 1em
  • Text Alignement: right

divi vertical sticky timeline

Then update the padding as well:

divi vertical sticky timeline

Right Heading Text

To create the heading for the gallery content on the right side of the page, copy the text module in the left column and paste it into the right column.

divi vertical sticky timeline

Then open the duplicate text module settings and update the following:

  • Text Text Color: #c22969
  • Text Alignment: Left (desktop), Left (tablet)

divi vertical sticky timeline

Row Settings

To give us the room we need on mobile, we need to update the row settings as follows:

  • Gutter Width: 1
  • Width: 100%
  • Max Width: 1280px
  • Padding: 10px top, 10px bottom

divi vertical sticky timeline

Under the advanced tab, add the following custom CSS to the Main Element on tablet:

display:flex;
flex-wrap:nowrap;

divi vertical sticky timeline

Left Column Settings

Because we are using a row gutter width of 1, there is no spacing between columns. To add sufficient spacing, open the settings for column 1 and update the padding as follows:

  • Padding (desktop): 10px top, 10px bottom, 20px left, 20px right
  • Padding (tablet): 10px bottom, 10px left, 10px right

divi vertical sticky timeline

Next, we want to override the default left column width on tablet and phone so that it is 30% of the row’s width. This will match the column width we are going to add to the columns in the timeline below.

To do this, open the settings for the left column (column1) and add the following CSS to the Main Element on Tablet:

width: 30% !important;

divi vertical sticky timeline

For the right column, we want to add the same padding as we did in column 1. And we will add a left border to the column to serve as a divider as follows:

  • Padding (desktop): 10px top, 10px bottom, 20px left, 20px right
  • Padding (tablet): 10px bottom, 10px left, 10px right
  • Left Border Width: 2px
  • Left Border Color: #333333

divi vertical sticky timeline

We also want the width of the right column to be 70% of the row’s width. To update the column width, open the settings of column 2 and add the following CSS to the Main Element on tablet:

width: 70% !important;

divi vertical sticky timeline

Section Settings

To finish off the heading design, open the section settings, and update the background color:

  • Background Color: #222222

divi vertical sticky timeline

Then update the section padding:

  • Padding: 0px top, 0px bottom

divi vertical sticky timeline

To make the section sticky, go the Advanced tab and update the following:

  • Sticky Position: Stick to Top

divi vertical sticky timeline

Part 2: Creating the Sticky Timeline

This next part of the design is where we create the sticky timeline portion of the layout. The key here is to design the first section, row, and modules with all of the elements in place. Then we can duplicate each section or row as needed.

Add Section

To start, add a new regular section under the heading section we just finished.

divi vertical sticky timeline

Before we start adding our rows and content, open the section settings and update the following:

  • Padding: 0px top, 0px bottom

divi vertical sticky timeline

Add the Row, Row Styles, and Column Structure

Next, create a one-fifth one-fifth three-fifths column row to the section.

divi vertical sticky timeline

To jumpstart the design of the row, copy the styles of the row in the heading section above and paste it into the new row.

divi vertical sticky timeline

Then open the settings of the new row and update the following:

  • Padding: 50px top, 50px bottom

divi vertical sticky timeline

Then add the custom CSS to the Main Element on tablet as follows:

display:flex;
flex-wrap:nowrap;

divi vertical sticky timeline

Creating the Sticky Year

The first sticky date element for the timeline will be the year. This “year” text element will stick to the top of the section on scroll.

To create the year text element, add a new text module to column 1.

divi vertical sticky timeline

Then add the text “2020” to the body.

divi vertical sticky timeline

Under the design tab, update the text styles as follows:

  • Text Font: Oxygen
  • Text Font Weight: Bold
  • Text Text Size: 40px (desktop), 24px (tablet), 18px (phone)
  • Text Alignment: right

divi vertical sticky timeline

To make the year stick to the top of the section, update the following:

  • Sticky Position: Stick to Top
  • Sticky Top Offset: 50px
  • Bottom Sticky Limit: Section

divi vertical sticky timeline

Creating the Sticky Month

To create the sticky month text, copy the text module containing the sticky year and paste it into column 2.

divi vertical sticky timeline

Then open the settings for the new text module in column 2 and update the text body with “dec” (the month abbreviation).

divi vertical sticky timeline

The month text needs to stick to the top of the row instead of the section, so update the sticky limit as follows:

divi vertical sticky timeline

Adding the Gallery Content

In the far right column (column 3), we are going to add the content that correlates to the specific month/year. In this case, we are going to add a gallery module to display a gallery of images.

To create the gallery, add a gallery module in column 3.

divi vertical sticky timeline

Then add at least 6 images to the gallery (or however many you want) and update the following:

  • Image Count: 6
  • Show Title and Caption: NO
  • How Pagination: NO

divi vertical sticky timeline

Under the design tab, update the following:

  • Padding: 3% left, 3% right

divi vertical sticky timeline

To create some custom spacing between the gallery items, add the following custom CSS to the Gallery Item CSS:

padding: 0 1% 2% 1%;

divi vertical sticky timeline

Update Column Widths and Spacing

Like we did for the columns in the heading section, we are going to give our columns custom spacing and widths (one mobile) so that they line up with the headings and look good on tablet and phone.

Column 1

Open the settings for column 1 and update the following:

  • Padding: 1% left, 2% right

divi vertical sticky timeline

Under the advanced tab, add the following custom CSS to the Main Element on tablet:

width: 15% !important;

divi vertical sticky timeline

Then open the settings for column 2 and add the same padding and CSS as follows:

  • Padding: 1% left, 2% right

Main Element CSS (tablet):

width: 15% !important;

divi vertical sticky timeline

Then open the settings for column 3 and update the padding and Main Element CSS as follows:

  • Padding: 1% left, 2% right

Main Element CSS (tablet):

width: 70% !important;

divi vertical sticky timeline

Duplicate the Row for Additional Months

Once the first row is complete, we can duplicate the row for additional months.

Duplicate the row.

divi vertical sticky timeline

In the duplicate row, take out the text for the year. We only need one year per section since the year will stick to the top and bottom of the section.

divi vertical sticky timeline

Then open the text for the month and update the month abbreviation with a new month.

divi vertical sticky timeline

Duplicate the Section for Additional Years

In the same way we duplicated the row for additional months, we can duplicate the entire section for additional years.

Go ahead and duplicate the section we just created for 2020 content.

divi vertical sticky timeline

In the duplicate section, update the year text in row 1, column 1 with the year “2019”.

divi vertical sticky timeline

You can continue this process to build addition years and months as needed for your timeline layout.

Final Result

Check out the final result.

Final Thoughts

The brunt of the design work for this timeline layout is to make it responsive by giving the text sizes and column width mobile-specific styles. But, the sticky positioning of the date elements is extremely easy with Divi’s built-in options. Hopefully, this will come in handy for future projects. I can see this being helpful for showcasing a history timeline for an about page or even for a resources page, downloads page, or product updates.

I look forward to hearing from you in the comments.

Cheers!

How to Get a Ready-Made Affiliate Website for Free

How to Get a Ready-Made Affiliate Website for Free

Affiliate marketing is one of the simplest ways to start receiving additional revenue almost without any effort. You don’t need to create products for yourself – you just have to post ready-made items onto your website and you can earn some money for every sale made from your link. If you are not really familiar with the mechanism on which affiliate marketing works – you should go through our detailed How to Get the Most of Affiliate Program article.

TemplateMonster’s affiliate program is as user-friendly as possible. You don’t really have to expend any special effort. You can download a ready-made theme for a landing page and use it to launch affiliate sales quickly and easily.

This theme is not an average template that has no real data. The archive you are going to download is a ready-made online store, completely ready for selling TemplateMonster’s products. You won’t have to waste any time seeking products; you just install the solution that will help you to begin receiving income right after launching the website. So, let’s go through the process step by step.

Ready To Use Website

Step 1. Downloading tools

Ready-Made Affiliate Website

This may seem rather obvious, but first of all, you have to download a few files and get yourself all the necessary tools. Besides the archive, you will need two more instruments: FileZilla and Notepad++. Those are free apps, so you don’t need to worry about price. But let’s take one thing at a time.

freecouponsites

Download | Hosting

Template. To download it – follow the link. It’s very simple, and you don’t need to register or leave an e-mail, just click the button and get a .zip file to your computer. Unpack it to a folder or to the desktop – it doesn’t really matter where, as long as you remember the location.

FileZilla has its own simple and understandable website. The link will take you to the page where you can get this app freely. Click the “Download FileZilla Client” and the .exe file will land in your “Downloads” folder. Launch the setup wizard, follow the recommendations, and install it on your computer. You will need it in the next step to upload the database.

Notepad++ app looks a lot like the common Windows Notepad tool but has a few convenient details that will be useful for customizing .php and .sql files. Hit the big green “Download” button, get the software, and install it on your computer.

These two apps work perfectly and are considered some of the best of their kind. However, if you don’t plan to use them further, you can just delete them after your website is launched.

Step 2. Transferring the database

Now, you have to register the hosting and get yourself a domain. You can still do it completely free – there are loads of free hosting websites. If you have no idea what this is talking about – go through the Easy As Lego article. For this tutorial we are using 000webhost – it is free and, to my mind, better than others. When the hosting and domain are ready, go to the settings and find the FTP details. FTP is File Transfer Protocol and you will need the data to connect to your hosting file management system via FileZilla. You can use the file management system right from the hosting, but believe me, using FileZilla will save you lots of time and effort. So, you are looking for something like this:

Ready-Made Affiliate Website

Open the FileZilla client and fill in the FTP data, then click the “Quickconnect” button. The left side of the client presents the files stored on your computer. The right one shows you what files are in your hosting file management system.

Ready-Made Affiliate WebsiteReady-Made Affiliate Website

Open the “public_html” folder on the hosting and if it contains some files – delete it. This is simple, just choose all the files that are in the folder, click the right mouse button and pick the “Delete” option.

Ready-Made Affiliate Website

Find the unpacked archive file you downloaded at the beginning. It contains a “wp” folder and two .sql files. Open the “wp” folder and copy all the files from it to the now empty “public_html” folder on the hosting. You can just drag-and-drop them to the proper FileZilla field.

Ready-Made Affiliate Website

When the transfer is finished don’t close FileZilla – you will still need it, so leave it open.

Step 3. Importing the database

It’s time to turn back to your hosting control panel. Go to the tab where you will be able to work with databases. In this case, it is a “Manage Database” tab. Find an option to create a new database and enter its name, username, and password.

Ready-Made Affiliate WebsiteReady-Made Affiliate Website

Pay attention to how the database and user are further named in the table – the hosting service could change it, so don’t miss it.

Ready-Made Affiliate Website

Return to FileZilla and open the “public_html” folder on the hosting side. Find the “wp-config.php” file and open it.

Ready-Made Affiliate Website

There will be three parameters to change: DB_NAME, DB_USER, and DB_PASSWORD. Replace the titles that are already mentioned in the file with the titles of your freshly created database. Don’t forget to save the file when you finish updating it.

Ready-Made Affiliate Website

Open the unpacked archive file you downloaded at the beginning. Besides the “wp” folder there are two .sql files. Choose the “en_masterbundles_landing” file and open it in Notepad++. You need to find the row numbered 59 and the URL mentioned there.

Ready-Made Affiliate Website

Hit the “Ctrl + F” buttons on your keyboard, but instead of searching something, choose the “Replace” tab. Type the URL that is now mentioned in the file to the upper bar and the URL of your website to the lower bar (your website’s URL is mentioned in your hosting and in the browser bar when you open the site). Click “Replace All” to change the whole file. Save the file after the replacement is finished.

Ready-Made Affiliate Website

Go to your hosting database management page and open the database you created a few minutes later. You will be asked to type the username and password. Be careful to use the username mentioned in the final database list.

Ready-Made Affiliate Website

Click on the database name and choose the “Import” tab. Hit the “Choose File” button and pick the freshly updated .sql file from the unpacked archive folder. After that, click “Go”.

Ready-Made Affiliate Website

Now, it is almost done. The ready-made online store is installed to your website and you can look at it by opening the URL. In general, it will look like this:

Ready-Made Affiliate Website

To do some customization, add /wp-admin/ to the URL in the search bar (it now will look like https://yoursite.com/wp-admin/). At this stage, you will need to enter the username and password. The username for this website will be “admin” and the password – “masterbundles2019”.

Voila! You have your website and it is completely ready for you to launch. You can customize it a little if you would like to, or leave it as it is.

Template installation

Conclusion

With the TemplateMonster affiliate program, you will be able to earn money with ease. The landing page you just created gives you an opportunity to sell not only TM products but any other affiliate items. For example, you can take part in the MasterBundles affiliate program. It also has a very nice list of advantages. So, create a website, start selling products, and become profitable! Good luck!

How to Add Web Push Notification to Your WordPress Site

Adding web push notifications to a WordPress website

Do you want to add push notifications to your WordPress site?

Push notifications let you send messages to users even when they are not visiting your website. This helps you bring back users to your website, increase traffic, and make more money.

In this article, we will show you how to easily add web push notifications to your WordPress site.

What are Push Notifications?

Push notifications are short, clickable notification messages that appear as a popup on users’ desktop or mobile devices.

They appear on top of the desktop or in the notification area on their mobile device. The best thing is that they can be shown even when the user’s browser is not open.

Here’s an example of a push notification in Windows 10:

The welcome / thank you notification message, as seen by the user

Push notifications let you reach users across devices with your latest updates and offers. Web push notifications are a very effective way to convert website visitors into loyal followers and customers.

Why Add Web Push Notifications to Your WordPress Site?

Did you know that 70% of people who leave your website will never come back? This is why you need to convert those website users into subscribers or customers.

You can do this by using multiple channels at once. This includes email marketing, social media, mobile or SMS marketing, and web push notifications.

Email lists are still the most powerful marketing tool available. However, we are finding that push notifications are also very effective.

On WPBeginner site, push notifications are consistently the top 5 traffic source.

The following are just some of the reasons that make push notifications a great marketing tool:

  • Users need to give their explicit permission to receive push notifications. This means they are already interested in what you have to offer and are more likely to engage with notifications.
  • Push notifications are shorter and demand less attention than email or social media updates.
  • There is no algorithm like on social media to limit your reach. Nearly 100% of messages are delivered.
  • Users can control how their devices display notifications. They can snooze them or turn them off entirely.
  • Not as many companies are using push notifications.

Popular sites including Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and many others understand the importance. They are already using web push notifications.

According to a survey, push notifications have a 50% higher open rate than email and twice as much click-rate. They are more engaging than SMS, email marketing, and social media platforms.

Having said that, let’s take a look at how to easily add web push notifications to a WordPress site.

Setting up Web Push Notifications in WordPress with PushEngage

Now, you need to upload that file to your website’s root folder in your WordPress hosting account. The root folder is the one where all the other folders and files are stored for your site. Normally, it’s the same folder where you’ll see /wp-content/ folder.

Simply connect to your website via FTP and upload the file. For help with this, check out our beginner-friendly guide on using FTP to upload files.

Tip: Not sure if you have the root folder? Look for an index.php file. If you see that, you’re in the right folder.

Uploading the service worker file via FTP

Now that you’ve uploaded the file, you can continue connecting WordPress to PushEngage.

The next step is to get your API key. Simply go to Settings » Site Settings » API Keys in your PushEngage dashboard. Then, go ahead and click the ‘Generate a New API Key’ button:

Setting Up Your Push Notification Messages

Now, you will see your PushEngage settings. Check that you’re happy with the General Settings. You can change your account details here or on the PushEngage website:

Viewing your PushEngage dashboard in WordPress

Next, it’s time to set up the message that people will see when they arrive on your website. Just click on the ‘Subscription Dialogbox’ tab to view and change the settings.

You will see your logo in the message, plus the default text. You can change this to your own message. Don’t forget to click the ‘Update Optin Settings’ button to save your changes.

Make sure you click the update button to save your changes to the subscription dialogbox

Below this, you can change the message that’s shown on the intermediate page. This is the page that appears after the user first clicks Allow.

Note: You can’t change what’s shown in the browser’s own popup box. This will always have the ‘Show notifications’ text plus Allow and Block buttons.

Just type in the text you want to use. Don’t forget to click the ‘Update Page Settings’ button.

Changing the intermediate page text in the PushEngage dashboard

You may want to create a welcome notification to thank people for subscribing. This also lets you easily test that your notifications are working.

Just click on the ‘Welcome Notification Settings’ tab to set it up. Here, you need to type in the title and message for the welcome notification. You can use your homepage as the URL, or you could send users to a specific page.

Make sure you check the ‘Send Welcome Notifications to Subscribers’ box to activate welcome notifications. You also need to click the Update button to save your changes.

Testing the Push Notifications on Your Website

Once you’ve set up push notifications, it’s best practice to check that they’re working as you expected.

To test your push notifications, open your website on your computer or phone.

You should immediately see the subscription dialog box that you set up. Here’s ours on a desktop computer:

And here’s our subscription dialogbox on a mobile device:

Go ahead and click the ‘Allow’ button. You should then see the intermediate page in a popup window. Here’s how it looks on a computer:

You need to click ‘Allow’ here too. Now, you’ve successfully subscribed to push notifications from your site.

Your welcome notification should appear on your screen within a few minutes. Here’s ours, showing the welcome message we created earlier:

What if a user chooses not to enable notifications but later wants to subscribe? This is automatically enabled with PushEngage. The user will see a bell widget in the bottom right corner of your website:

They can simply click on this to subscribe to your website. To change the bell notification widget, simply go to Settings » Subscription Settings » Opt-in Management in your PushEngage account.

You can change the color, position, and label of the widget:

You can even swap the bell for a button that appears along the side of the website like this:

Sending Push Notifications to Your Subscribers

By default, PushEngage will send out a notification for each new post. These notifications will include the post title and a small version of the featured image. When a user clicks the notification, they’ll be taken straight to your blog post:

If you don’t want automatic notifications, then you can turn them off by visiting PushEngage » General Settings in your WordPress dashboard.

Simply scroll down to the ‘WordPress Post Settings’ section and uncheck the ‘Auto Push’ box. Don’t forget to click on the ‘Save WordPress Settings’ button.

You can create custom notifications at any time in PushEngage. Just log into your account on the PushEngage website then go to Notifications » Create » New Notification.

This screen gives you the option to set the title, message, URL, image, and more. You can schedule notifications to go out at a later time or you can send them immediately.

Tip: If you’re pre-scheduling notifications, make sure your time zone is correct. It’s easy to check or change this under Settings » Site Settings » Site Preferences in your account on the PushEngage website.

We’ve created a special notification for our blog post with a custom title and message.

Other PushEngage Features to Use for Your Website

PushEngage offers a wide range of other features, even on the free plan.

For instance, you can set up an overlay. This appears on top of your website content and shows the user where to click to allow notifications. Here’s an overlay in action on the PushEngage website:

An example of a PushEngage overlay

You can set up an overlay in your account on the PushEngage website. Simply go to Settings » Subscription Settings » Opt-in Management and scroll down to the ‘Subscription Overlay’ section.

Then, check the ‘Enable Subscription Overlay’ button. You can use the default overlay label or type in a different one:

Due to the way the Safari browser works, you need to go through some extra steps if you want Safari users to be able to subscribe to your push notifications. To enable web push notifications for Safari, you need an Apple developer account ($99/year). You can then create a unique Push ID for your website.

Once you have your Push ID and you’ve created a certificate, you then need to add these under Settings » Subscription Settings » Safari Web Push:

Other Good WordPress Push Notification Plugins

It is important to choose the right web push notification service from the start. Many providers try to lock you into their platform. That means changing your push notification service can mean losing your subscribers. So if you switch, you will be starting again from scratch.

This is why we suggest asking the provider you choose for all settings you need to configure to make your subscriber list portable.

We recommend PushEngage because it has a generous free plan plus lots of powerful paid features. With PushEngage’s paid plans, you can:

  • Set up a drip autoresponder, such as for a welcome campaign
  • Send notifications when a user has abandoned their cart
  • Trigger campaigns based on users’ actions
  • Allow users to add product alerts for when a product goes on sale or is back in stock
  • … and more

WordPress is all about choices. Here are some other WordPress push notification plugins that you may want to try:

  • PushCrew – Connects your website to PushCrew’s push notification service. They offer a free plan limited to 2000 subscribers.
  • PushAlert – Web Push Notifications – Helps you connect to PushAlert web push notification service. They also offer a free plan limited to 3000 subscribers.
  • PushAssist – Connector plugin for the PushAssist web push notification service. Their free plan is limited to 2000 subscribers.
  • OneSignal – Has a limited free plan that includes basic web push notification features. Their upsell tactics are very aggressive and support isn’t helpful. This is why we’re switching away from OneSignal in the coming weeks.

Mobile Inbound Marketing: What You Need to Know

Mobile Inbound Marketing: What You Need to Know

Is your brand mobile-friendly? Mobile optimization is more important than ever. In fact, the world has seen a 220% increase in mobile device use over the last seven years. If you want your brand to reach this tremendous number of mobile users, then you should consider leveraging mobile inbound marketing.

Mobile inbound marketing is the practice of leveraging mobile optimization across all online platforms. It engages audiences using their mobile devices. When your online business presence is fully mobile-friendly, you’ll have lower bounce rates, higher engagement, and higher conversion rates as a result.

Now, more than ever, people are using smartphones to communicate, surf the web, and conduct business. That number is only going to continue increasing. If you want to reach your audience and convert new followers in the process, making your brand completely mobile-friendly is essential.

Want to know how to build your mobile inbound marketing strategy? Read on.

Optimize Your Website for Mobile

These days, many of us are spending a large portion of our lives on the internet–not just on our computers and tablets, but our phones, too. We’re constantly connected. These days, it simply doesn’t make sense for you to have a website that doesn’t work on a mobile browser.

If you want to keep visitors on your site, they have to be able to access it from their phone or tablet. Your website should be mobile optimized and easy to view and navigate on a smartphone screen. Some DIY website services, such as Squarespace and Wix, offer a mobile view so you can preview what your site looks like on mobile.

The risks of not creating a seamless, easy-to-access experience for your customers are high. Fifty-one percent of consumers say that if they have a negative experience with a company, they won’t return. And, 74% of shoppers say they’re more likely to switch from one brand to another if the buying process is too difficult. Failing to optimize for mobile inbound marketing leaves your brand vulnerable to losing a significant number of customers.

Format Video and Graphics for Mobile

In addition to making your website mobile-friendly, pay careful attention to your images and videos. They’ll also need to be mobile-friendly. In particular, vertical video has become increasingly popular recently because it utilizes the entire phone screen in vertical format. As a result, users don’t have to rotate their screen to get the full effect.

Your graphics will also need to be optimized for mobile inbound marketing. That means you’ll want images that aren’t too large or slow to load. You’ll also want formats that are easy to see and appreciate on a small screen. Pay attention to details such as the size of the text on your graphics and the dimensions of your images.

Make Sure Your Marketing Emails Are Mobile-Friendly

Email marketing is another, often overlooked aspect of your strategy that should be optimized for mobile inbound marketing. Many email programs now have mobile preview available. Here are a few tips for making sure your emails are ideal for mobile users:

  • Make sure your subject lines aren’t so long that they get cut off on a phone screen. Your audience needs to be able to read the entire subject line at a glance on their phone.
  • Double-check image size, making sure your image fits well onto a vertical phone screen and doesn’t take too long to load.
  • Select a font size that isn’t too small to read on a phone.

Leverage Social and Branded Apps

It’s likely that your audience is hanging out on social media apps when they’re scrolling on their phones. Make sure you have a presence on any social media sites that make sense for your brand. This helps keep you top-of-mind outside your own branded online properties (like your website, email, or app).

Some popular social media apps that can be effective for businesses include:

  • Facebook
  • Instagram
  • TikTok
  • Twitter

In addition to interacting on social media, you can leverage social messaging apps to maximize your mobile inbound marketing efforts. Utilizing messaging apps as part of your marketing strategy can help keep your marketing more conversational and personalized. It also keeps your followers engaged with your brand.

Some brands take mobile inbound marketing a step further and build apps to extend their brand experience beyond website and in-store customer interactions. You can do this by building a complete mobile app, which can be costly and time-consuming. Or, you might consider creating a progressive web app that makes interacting with your brand easier on mobile devices.

Find Out How Your Audience is Interacting with Your Brand on Mobile

It’s helpful to get an idea of how your audience interacts with your brand on their mobile devices. You can check analytics to get a partial picture, but consider sending a survey to your audience in exchange for a 10% coupon code.

Additionally, you could form a focus group or simply have conversations with customers. Ask questions to learn more about their mobile activity. Then, make adjustments based on your new insights.

Wrapping Up

Mobile inbound marketing is all about expanding your brand’s presence across all possible online channels. It’s about making your products, services, and content accessible to anyone, whether they’re using a desktop computer or mobile device

To quickly recap, here are some of the top ways you can optimize your brand for mobile inbound marketing:

  • Make sure your website is easy to view, navigate, and use on mobile devices
  • Leverage vertical video, rather than horizontal video
  • Optimize your graphics for mobile screens and make sure they load quickly
  • Check in with your emails and verify they are optimized for mobile screens
  • Establish and maintain an active, engaging social media presence
  • Consider interacting with customers via social messaging apps
  • Explore whether developing an app is right for your brand
  • Survey your audience to find out how they’re interacting with your brand on mobile

How to Fix the Facebook and Instagram oEmbed Issue in WordPress

Fix Facebook and Instagram oEmbed Issue in WordPress

If you have ever embedded Facebook or Instagram content in WordPress using the default oEmbed or Embed blocks feature, then you need to implement this fix immediately.

Starting October 24th, you will no longer be able to automatically embed Facebook and Instagram content in WordPress using the default methods due to a breaking change in the Facebook API.

But don’t worry, in this article, we will show you how to fix the Facebook and Instagram embed issue in WordPress, so your content embeds keep working, and you never lose any features.

Why will the Facebook & Instagram Embeds Stop Working?

That’s because Facebook recently announced that all oEmbed requests for Facebook and Instagram content will be deprecated on October 24th, 2020.

This API is fundamental to both Gutenberg and the WordPress Classic editor’s default embed feature that lets you easily embed videos, pictures, updates, and other content from Facebook and Instagram.

Instead, Facebook now requires each developer to register an app, and use a client token when getting data from their Graph API for oEmbed content.

This is not scalable for WordPress core team to implement in the WordPress project, so a decision has been made to remove Facebook and Instagram embed feature from WordPress core in favor of letting WordPress plugins solve the issue for users (core ticket #50861).

So basically if you have any Facebook embeds in your WordPress content, then they will break and look like this after October 24th:

Facebook oEmbed Before and After

If you have any Instagram embeds in your WordPress content, they will break and look like this after October 24th:

Instagram oEmbed Before and After API Change

How to Fix the Facebook & Instagram oEmbed Issue (Restore Default Features)

The easiest and most beginner friendly way to fix the oEmbed issue is to use the Smash Balloon free Instagram Feed plugin, and custom Facebook Feed plugin. For more details, see our step by step guide on how to install a WordPress plugin.

These plugins are developed by our team at Awesome Motive, and they’re used by over 1.2 million users.

When we heard about this upcoming breaking change, we realized that we were in the best position to solve the problem for our users and the larger WordPress community.

Since Smash Balloon has to register an API key to create custom feeds for both Facebook and Instagram, we didn’t need any additional authentication to restore this functionality.

If you’re already using our Smash Balloon feed plugin, then you simply need to upgrade to the latest version, and the default oEmbed features will continue to work without any issues.

If you run into any troubles, or if you’re a new user who wants to restore the oEmbed functionality, then simply go to the oEmbed navigation menu under Smash Ballon’s Facebook / Instagram feed plugin, and then click on the Connect button.

SmashBalloon New oEmbed Features

The best part about using the Smash Balloon plugins is that you will NOT need to go through a complicated process of creating your own app.

We made the process easy for beginners, and as a bonus, you’ll now have all the powerful custom feed features of the Smash Ballon Instagram and Facebook feed plugins.

Alternate Method: Restore Default Facebook / Instagram oEmbed Features

If you’re a developer and would prefer to go through the complex process of registering a Facebook app for each client site to restore this functionality, then you can use the oEmbed Plus plugin.

It’s a new plugin created by one of the volunteer developers to restore the default oEmbed for Facebook and Instagram.

Act Fast and Spread the Word

There are only 12 days left before the Facebook and Instagram embeds in WordPress will stop working.

If you have ever embedded content from Facebook or Instagram on your site using the default embed features, then you need to act fast.

We strongly recommend that you install and activate the Smash Balloon free Instagram Feed plugin, and custom Facebook Feed plugin.

If you’re new in your WordPress journey and just started a blog, then we also recommend that you install the above plugins, so you have access to the easy embed blocks for Facebook and Instagram.

Last but not least, we need your help in spreading the word, so more people can fix this issue on their website before things start breaking. Please share this article in your network and help us spread the word.
